Perfect camera for wildlife photography
I take photos of birds. 90% of the time of flying birds, principally raptors -- distant, fast-moving subjects in poor quality lighting conditions. I fitted the 7D with a Canon 300 mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto lens. additionally used both Canon Extenders EF II (1.4X and 2X), and typically used a lightweight Manfrotto tripod. Shot nearly one,000 RAW and JPEG throughout the primary 10 days after obtaining the camera. Image quality is outstanding (without the extenders incredibly so). Focusing speed may be even faster than with my previous camera (40D) but it's still early on to be definitive. eight fps burst speed is notoriously faster than the vi.4 fps i was used to. "Zone AF" and "AF point expansion" focusing modes (new to me) are terribly effective for following distant flying birds (better than Spot AF mode, that I used with the 40D). For nearer birds "Spot AF" is preferable so one can improve chances of focusing the head/eye. RAW files are huge (20-24 Mb each) so obtain the fastest memory card and card reader you'll. unfortunately, neither iPhoto nor Snow Leopard scan 7D's CR2 format as of fifteen Dec 2009. Photoshop CS4 (properly updated) does though, and so does Canon's included software, of course. The 7D uses a battery slightly totally different from the XXD series, so now i would like to carry two battery chargers, and my batteries don't seem to be interchangeable between cameras. I additionally bought the Canon 28-135 mm F3.5-5.6 IS included in the kit, and however a bit less sharp than my Canon fifty mm F1.8 EF II, it performs well throughout the zoom range. If you'll afford only 1 lens this is most likely a decent selection for general photography, and good price for the comparatively little extra cash. Full HD Video is extremely sharp and colors well balanced. Nice to own the external mic input. Best to show the IS off when shooting video without an external mic or a buzzing noise (the IS drives) can contaminate your sound track. I still have to be compelled to run a series of additional controlled tests to make a sounder opinion but to date i'm proud of the upgrade. The 1.6X cropping factor rules out this camera for landscape photography, but identical feature combined with the eight fps and new AF modes most likely makes this camera -dollar for dollar- the best current selection for telephoto wildlife photography. this is the camera i was waiting for! As straightforward as that.
17 Dec 2009 update. I updated my software these days and both Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.8) and Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.2) open and method RAW images (in "Preview") taken with the 7D. iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5) imported RAW images from this camera simply fine this time. now i'm happy!
